Roberto Bautista Agut and Spain team in tears after Davis Cup win over loss of his father

Davis Cup star Roberto Bautista Agut broke down during an emotional post-match interview, after beating Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime.

The Spaniard was in tears while speaking after the match, which he won 7-6, 6-3, as his father passed away just three days ago.

Team-mates Pablo Carreno Busta and Feliciano Lopez were also in tears, as Agut thanked his team and the crowd for their support.

Agut’s win means Spain will be crowned Davis Cup champions if Rafael Nadal beats Denis Shapovalov in the second singles match.

“It was very special feeling on the court,” Agut told Eurosport in a separate interview.

“I just could go out and try my best, give my best.

“I am very happy I could win the first point for Spain.”

He made a surprise return to the Spain Davis Cup team after his father died on Thursday.

Rafael Nadal admitted that the Spanish team were emotionally drained after a tough week.

“There are a lot of emotions out there,” he said, before the final.

“We went through a lot of things this week, honestly, every day.

“I went to my room at 4:24 in the morning today. Two days ago the father of Roberto passed away. Today Pablo and Marcel were not well. A lot of things.

“So we needed to find a way. We knew it was going to be a very tough battle out there, not a lot of chances. We can’t be happier than to be where we are today.”

Agut won the first rubber of the final, after an emotional clash after Auger-Aliassime.

The Spaniard won the first set in a tie breaker, 7-3, before easing to a straight sets victory.

If Spain win the Davis Cup, it’ll be the first time they’ve won it since 2011.

But, Canada have never won the competition, and have only reached the final for the first time this year.
