Report: Three Illinois Racing Board Commissioners, Including Chairman, Resign

The Daily Racing Form reported late Thursday that three commissioners from the Illinois Racing Board resigned abruptly this week. Among them was board chairman Jeff Brincat, who had been appointed to the group in 2015.

The resignations leave the board, which is meant to include 11 commissioners, with five. The group already had three empty seats going into this week.

Also leaving the board are Greg Sronce, who had been part of the group since 2012, and Edgar Ramirez, who was appointed in 2017.

News out of Illinois racing has not been good in recent months, as the Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association and Arlington Park currently have no contract in place for this year’s race meet. The horsemen were at an impasse with the track in negotiations over purse structures when the deadline for an agreement passed.

The track’s future had already been called into question when the Board threatened to withhold 2020 dates from Arlington after learning its parent company, Churchill Downs Inc, did not plan to seek a casino license for the track. CDI owns a portion of an already-existing casino not far from Arlington.
