Reed: Mark Davis’ absence is notable as the Raiders begin to forge ahead without Jon Gruden

Mike Mayock, Rich Bisaccia, Derek Carr, Darren Waller and Maxx Crosby shouldn’t have had to represent their organization on Wednesday when the Raiders held their first news conferences since former coach Jon Gruden’s resignation Monday; Mark Davis should have.

Davis is the owner of the team. He hired Gruden to a reported 10-year, $100 million contract in 2018. Davis gave Gruden final call on personnel decisions. Davis made Gruden the face of the franchise.

Despite the fact that the Wall Street Journal published a racist email from Gruden and the NFL sent Davis the racist, homophobic and misogynistic emails that Gruden sent from 2011 to 2018 last Friday, Davis made the call not to take immediate action. Davis put out a statement Friday that said he would review the email and “other materials” provided by the NFL but allowed Gruden to coach on Sunday against the Bears. And following the New York Times report exposing more offensive emails Monday, Davis watched as Gruden stepped down while giving nothing more than a statement accepting his resignation.
