It comes as no surprise, but Case Keenum will be under center for the Washington Redskins to open the season.
Coach Jay Gruden officially announced Sunday that Keenum would get the nod as the team’s starting quarterback, beating out rookie Dwayne Haskins and injured veteran Colt McCoy to win the role.
This became inevitable early on. McCoy broke his leg last year and simply isn’t ready to play, while Haskins looked shaky despite flashing promise during the preseason. His time will presumably come, but that time is not now.
The 31-year-old Keenum started all 16 games for the Denver Broncos in 2018. While he threw for 3,890 yards, his other numbers were disappointing: 15 interceptions to just 18 touchdowns. His best work remains 2017, when he went 11-3 as a starter for the Minnesota Vikings, throwing 22 touchdowns to just seven interceptions.
