Zinedine Zidane insists Real Madrid are in for a strong season, despite their latest efforts on the pitch suggesting otherwise.

The Frenchman saw his side humiliated at the Metlife Stadium Arena in New Jersey on Friday evening as they were thumped 7-3 by rivals Atletico in the final leg of their US tour.

It brought the curtain down on a thoroughly miserable trip, in which Real failed to win a single game.

A serious injury to Marcos Asensio and the constant questions over the future of Gareth Bale set the tone for the pre-season tour across the Atlantic, but Zidane insists that tone will change once the season gets underway.

‘We will be motivated,’ he said after the match. ‘I have no doubts about that.

‘Our season is going to be good. I am convinced.

‘We can’t be happy with today. But with everything else, I’m convinced that I have a team that will compete very well.

‘It doesn’t worry me but it hurts. You don’t play to lose. But it’s happened and we can’t look back. It was a bad game.’

Real have invested heavily during the transfer window, but have yet to see any real signs of promise from their new recruits.

Luka Jovic and Eden Hazard mustered just two shots between them during the entire trip, but after another uninspired performance in New Jersey, Zidane refused to point fingers.

‘The players also know that, and are disappointed. They aren’t failing me,’ he added.

‘There’s no need to look at it again. It’s a pre-season game and we need to be calm.

‘[Eden] Hazard didn’t play badly. Everyone did. We got it wrong, especially at the start.

‘They were better at everything, and that’s it. There’s nothing more to say.’

Real Madrid return to Europe this weekend, before taking part in the Audi Cup on Tuesday, when they face Tottenham at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
