Rafael Nadal’s Uncle Toni blasts Wimbledon seeding decision to promote Roger Federer

The draw for Wimbledon 2019 will be conducted on Friday morning with plenty at stake for the players.

But the build-up to the draw has been dominated by the decision to move Federer to the second seed, ahead of Nadal.

Wimbledon uses a unique system which benefits player results over the last two years to decide the top 32 seeds rather than the ATP world rankings.

And it has meant Federer, who is ranked third, has moved up by one and Nadal, who is ranked second, falls by one.

Federer was able to earn the higher seed courtesy of his win in Halle on Sunday while Nadal opted not to play a grass court event and it has cost him.

Earlier this week, the 33-year-old bemoaned Wimbledon’s formula saying: “It’s just Wimbledon that does it.

“If everyone did it, I think it would be appropriate or correct. Either way, being second or third seed, I have to play at the best level to aspire to the things I aspire to.

“It is better to be second than third, but if they consider that I have to be third, I will accept.”

And now his uncle Toni has delivered a scathing assessment, telling Spanish radio the decision shows a lack of respect.

“It’s a well-known topic, the Wimbledon guys are used to differentiating themselves because of this kind of thing, it’s a bit ugly, but it’s what they’ve always done,” he told El Larguero.

“They’re used to going their own way and they act like that because they feel special and maybe they think they have the right to do things as they want. It’s a bad beginning.

“It’s true that it’s a very important tournament but it would be more logical [if the seedings] were based on what is based around the world, on the measures that govern the ATP.

“I think it’s a lack of respect but to the ATP circuit. They [Wimbledon] act at their own discretion if everyone did the same thing it would be a complete disaster… but I think they feel very special.”
