Rafael Nadal suffers stomach injury scare against Stan Wawrinka at the Paris Masters

Rafael Nadal received treatment from the tournament doctor in the second set of his Paris Masters win over Stan Wawrinka.

Nadal won the first 6-4 and appeared to be moving well in the second set but after Wawrinka held serve to lead 3-2, Nadal received a visit from the doctor.

The Spaniard could be heard asking to take something for his stomach and he pointed to his lower abdominal area.

He then took a supplement and was able to continue playing and showed no ill-effects.

Nadal broke Wawrinka to lead 5-4 and he served out the match to 15 to take his place in the quarter-finals.

The 33-year-old has a history of injury problems in the final stages of the year and this is just his eighth appearance at the event in Paris.

Speaking to the ATP after the match, Nadal was not asked about the treatment he had but did say he was happy with how he played.

“It was a match with not many rallies,” he told the ATP after the match.

“I played with some mistakes but at the same time I played well with my serve so I was able to be comfortable with my serve.

“On the return it was difficult today to find opportunities but the important thing was that when I had opportunities, I played with the right determination.

“I’m very happy. It is an important victory against a very tough opponent.”

Prior to the tournament, Nadal spoke about how injuries had played a major part in him being unable to win the tournament in Paris.

He said: ”I get injured a lot of times, it’s true. I miss this tournament a lot of times in my career. And other times I didn’t play well and other times opponents have been better than me.

“Of course it’s an indoor surface that in the past is the surface that I had less chances. I think I have been improving the game to be able play well. I think this year the surface is quite quick, quite fast.

“But I don’t know. I’m happy to be here. As everybody knows, for me it’s the most important city in my tennis career, so I love to be in Paris. Always gives me good vibes.

“And I think I’m doing the right steps to try to be ready for the action on hopefully Wednesday. Let’s see.”
