Rafael Nadal reveals why he thinks Wimbledon seedings are unfair after Roger Federer draw

Nadal thinks the seeding system for Wimbledon isn’t fair, and is something he doesn’t understand.

While he respects the tournament, he said ATP may have to consider making some changes.

The sport isn’t solely played on grass, and it’s unfair to place extra prestige on a player’s history on grass, he claimed.

Wimbledon has a different seeding system to the other three Grand Slams.

The seeding order is more reflective of an individual player’s grass court achievements over the previous two years.

The end result is that world number three, Federer, moves up to second seed, above world number two, Nadal, who is third seed.

Federer now won’t meet Djokovic until the final, should both players reach that stage.

It also meant that Nadal had a 50/50 chance of meeting Djokovic ahead of the final. But, he was subsequently drawn on the same side as Federer.

“The stuff is about ATP,” said Nadal. “ATP we give 2000 points to this event. We let them do whatever they want.

“That’s something that I don’t understand, because I can’t create an impact, not by myself.

“I really come here to play tennis. For me the goal is the same always, it doesn’t matter if I’m second or third.

“Of course, [it] can create an impact in the rankings at the end of the year, for example for Sascha [Zverev], for Dominic [Thiem].

“It is not only about grass. The season is not only on grass. All the players work so hard to be where they are, then arrive here, they see a possibility to be in a tougher draw because of that.

“Talking about if is fair or not, I respect the Wimbledon rules.

“Another thing is if I believe that is fair or not, that’s another story. I really personally believe is not.”

Nadal kicks off his Wimbledon campaign on Tuesday July 2, against world number 258 Yuichi Sugita.
