Rafael Nadal reveals truth behind Nick Kyrgios feud ahead of potential Wimbledon clash

One of the highlights of Friday’s Men’s singles draw for Wimbledon was when Nadal and Kyrgios were drawn close to each other.

The Spaniard will first need to get past Yuichi Sugita, while Kyrgios will face fellow Australian Jordan Thompson in his first round clash.

But if both players progress, they’re set to meet in what could be an explosive second round match.

Tensions flared at the Mexican Open in a fiery contest between Kyrgios and Nadal.

The 24-year-old was branded as disrespectful by Nadal after Kyrgios won the tense match and it seemed to spark a war of words between the two.

Last month, Kyrgios appeared on a podcast where he didn’t hold back in slamming the world No 2.

“He’s my polar opposite, like literally my polar opposite. And he’s super salty,” he said at the time.

“Every time I’ve beaten him … when he wins, it’s fine. He won’t say anything bad, he’ll credit the opponent, ‘He was a great player’.”

He added: “It’s not a good look for you, I feel. And then Uncle Toni (Nadal) came out saying, ‘He lacks education’. I’m like, ‘Bra, I did 12 years at school, you idiot. I’m very educated. I understand that you’re upset I beat your family again’.”

But while Nadal preferred to focus on his opening round match against Sugita, he did give a little insight into his relationship with Kyrgios.

“I don’t know Nick, being honest,” he said.

“I don’t want to talk about Nick much because I am not playing against Nick. I am playing against Sugita.

“Every match is tough. If I am able to win my match and if Nick is able to win his match, you will have the time to ask me about the next match, no?”

Nadal enters Wimbledon having won back-to-back tournaments at the Italian Open and French Open.

He didn’t played any of the grass court ATP event ahead of Wimbledon, although he did compete at the Aspall Tennis Classic this week.

However, he suffered defeats to both Marin Cilic and Lucas Pouille and faces a tough draw at Wimbledon.

While a potential match against Kyrgios awaits in the second round, the No 3 seed could also face Denis Shapovalov, Marin Cilic and Dominic Thiem before a possible semi-final clash with Roger Federer.
