Rafael Nadal refuses to be drawn into Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic US Open debate

Rafael Nadal has a clear path to the US Open final but he refused to discuss Novak Djokovic’s misfortune of being placed in the same half of the draw as Roger Federer.

World No 2 Nadal raged at Wimbledon earlier this summer when he would have been made to play Federer and Djokovic back-to-back, had he not lost in the semi-final to the former.

The Spaniard’s two biggest rivals were drawn in the opposite half at Flushing Meadows which makes him the favourite to reach the final.

But Nadal refused to accept that he is now in the driving seat.

“I don’t know, I have to win my matches to have an advantage,” Nadal said at his pre-tournament press conference.

“I can only meet them in the semi-finals. I have plenty of work before that to know if I have an advantage or not.

“Let’s see if I am able to do my work from my side.

“But that’s not an advantage or disadvantage, that’s part of the draw.

“That’s part of the things that happens when you are No 1, No 2 or No 3.

“For example, at Wimbledon it was the other way, they change it, but here it is obviously normal. Let’s see what’s going on.”

Meanwhile, Nadal also picked his favourite ever US Open match.

The 2013 final with over Novak Djokovic stands out head and shoulders above the rest.

“The best match that I probably have the best memory of in the 2013 final,” Nadal added.

“It was such an important victory for me after a long injury in 2012.

“To be able ton win a Grand Slam here on hard again was so special to me.”
