Rafael Nadal raises injury concerns at Paris Masters ahead of Stan Wawrinka clash

Rafael Nadal is concerned he may pick up an injury at the Paris Masters.

The world No 2 has pulled out of the season-ending Masters event on seven occasions and also had to retire twice.

So it is not surprising that Nadal has never won an ATP 1000 title in the French capital.

And the 19-time Grand Slam winner is frightened of picking up a problem, especially as he only returned to action after a month lay-off this week.

“Here we are. It is always historically I have issues at the end of the season – and sometimes at the beginning, and sometimes in the middle,” Nadal said.

“I am always a little bit scared because this tournament I had plenty of things during all my career.

“When I am here it is always a little bit more dangerous for me but I am happy to be here and happy to compete again at a good level.”

Nadal came through his opening match of the tournament unscathed.

The 33-year-old beat Adrian Mannarino in straight-sets to set up a clash with Stan Wawrinka.

“Let’s see tomorrow is another day. Another tough match against Stan,” Nadal added.

“Let’s see if I’m able to play another good match.”

Nadal also explained what he got up to while recovering from the wrist injury which ruled him out of the Asian swing.

“I had good feelings. I was able to do some good work at home,” he said.

“I worked on things that we believed could help of these surfaces and the serve was one of these things.

“I don’t think I faced one break point in the match up against a player who returns well so that means a lot.

“The feelings are good to be back on this court. This city is special for me, the crowd is great with me here.

“I am excited to play another day here.”
