Rafael Nadal hammers Dan Evans to take Great Britain vs Spain to Davis Cup doubles decider

Rafael Nadal disposed of Dan Evans in the Davis Cup semi-final singles to send the tie into a doubles decider.

Kyle Edmund got Great Britain off to a winning start by beating late sub Feliciano Lopez in straight sets.

But world No.1 Rafael Nadal draw the tie level by beating British No.1 Dan Evans 6-4 6-0 in only 85 minutes.

Playing Nadal in Madrid’s Magic Box was like Daniel entering the lion’s den with huge support for the home favourite.

Evans fought well in the first set and it went on serve until Nadal broke at 5-4 to take the lead.

The second set was less even and was all over when the world No.42 hit aa forehand into the net.

It was Nadal’s 28th consecutive Davis Cup singles win stretching back to 2004 – and he has lost only five sets in 15 years.

“It was a tough first set,” said the French and US Open champion.

“He played great, changing the rhythm. I played a great game on the return at 5-4 in the first set and after that, I started to play with more freedom in my shots and with less pressure.

“I am super happy with the victory. I hope we can now play a good match in the doubles.”

Nadal had dedicated his semi-final victory to his team-mate Roberto Bautista Agut, who was forced to withdraw following the death of his father.

“People always respond but you also have to help them, and the only way to help them take part in the matter is that you transmit what they need and more at this time,” he said.

“The fans are being incredible, the atmosphere is unbeatable, and we can only to thank.

“Having this support gives us this extra adrenaline that is needed.”
