Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic ‘will do everything’ to overcome Roger Federer challenge

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will take more risks in 2020 to try and close down Roger Federer’s records, according to former world No 42 Stefano Pescosolido. The trio are expected to dominate the Grand Slam again next season.

Federer has won 20 Grand Slam titles throughout his glittering career which is one more than Nadal and four greater than Djokovic.

However, the two challengers to Federer’s throne are both younger so have time on their side.

And Pescosolido reckons it will be the trio who dominate the ATP tour once again next season.

However, he has warned that four youngsters could be in the reckoning to win one of the biggest tournaments of them all.

“Of course they will also be the main protagonists in 2020, there is a very coveted Slam record, the pursuers will do everything to overcome Federer,” Pescosolido told Italian outlet Sports Fair when asked about the Big Three.

“They remain the absolute favourites, but I expect a challenge from [Dominic] Thiem, [Alexander] Zverev and [Stefanos] Tsitsipas, they can undermine them together with [Stefanos] Medvedev.”

Meanwhile, Matteo Berrettini broke into the top 10 of the world rankings this year and Pescosolido has tipped his fellow Italian to kick on in 2020.

“Certainly Matteo Berrettini is the revelation of 2019, an extraordinary season,” he said.

“I believe that in the coming years it will maintain very high levels. He is a complete, modern tennis player with great forehand and service.

“Due to its characteristics, Matteo adapts to all surfaces and has improved a lot on concrete as demonstrated at the US Open.

“It is a great advantage in modern tennis to have the ability to score points on all surfaces. Maybe not always in the first 10, but in the first 20 we will see it for many years.

“He also has a coach trained as Santopadre and the support of the Federation, as well as a large athletic staff.

“He is a controlled player who works very well and continues to grow and improve. He has high expectations and will be able to manage the pressures.”
