Pep Guardiola made a couple of tactical tweaks against Olympiakos as he searched for answers to Manchester City’s recent attacking woes, but it was perhaps a simple injection of energy that underpinned their best moments.
Both with and without the ball City looked sharper than they have done in many of their Premier League games this season. Whether closing down the Greek champions to win the ball back or pinging passes around on the edge of the box, best demonstrated by Phil Foden’s winner, Guardiola’s side looked a bit more like their old selves. For a bit, anyway.
Guardiola acknowledged in the build-up to the game that he had to find the solution to their recent stodgy performances and steps were taken towards that aim even if the second half could be better described as stale domination.
The most important thing may well be that they have sealed qualification for the last-16 with two games to spare, which should make their fixture list…
