A puppy has been rescued from the rubble of Isis leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s secret lair, which was destroyed during a US raid.

Donald Trump said Baghdadi detonated a suicide vest, killing himself and his three children after US-led forces swarmed his compound.

Photojournalist Fared Alhor said he heard there were animals still near the site and decided to travel by motorbike for four hours to rescue them.

At the scene of devastation in Barisha, a village near Idlib, in north-west Syria, Fared discovered a dust-covered puppy whimpering by its dead mother’s side.

Shocking photos show the orphaned puppy staying by its mother who was crushed to death by falling debris.

Fared told Metro.co.uk: ‘When I found the dog he was very sad because of the loss of her mother in the bombing.

‘I began playing with the small dog so it didn’t feel sad for its mother.’

Fared described the aftermath and destruction of the airstrike as ‘dramatic’.

He fed the puppy and named him Bobe before taking him to a new family away from Barisha.

Fared added: ‘He is now very happy with his new family.’

When asked why he risked his own life entering such dangerous territory to save a puppy, Fared said: ‘For humanity. I am a media activist and photographer for the Syrian Revolution.

‘I work for humanity.’

Fared said he also had to abandon his home in Maarat al-Nu’man, a city south of Idlib, after the Assad regime destroyed his house earlier this year.

The sad tale of Bobe the puppy lies in stark contrast to the attention being given to Conan the military working dog.

President Trump praised the ‘wonderful’ Belgian Malinois for his role in the mission to kill al-Baghdadi.

Conan was injured when al-Baghdadi detonated a suicide vest in a dead-end tunnel beneath his compound.

General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the military dog ‘performed a tremendous service’ and is now recovering.

The dog has since returned to duty at an undisclosed location, Gen Milley said.

Trump first spoke of the dog’s injuries and heroic efforts when he revealed details of the raid at a press conference on Sunday.

He said: ‘Our “K-9” as they call it – I call it a dog – a beautiful dog, a talented dog, was injured and brought back.’

In 2011, a Belgian Malinois named Cairo was used in the operation to capture and kill Osama bin Laden.

The Malinois breed is similar to German shepherds but smaller and favoured by the US military to guide and protect troops, search out enemy forces and look for explosives.

The breed is prized for its intelligence and ability to be aggressive on command.
