A 12-week-old puppy may be the most unlikely roofer Richard Haughton has ever hired.

Shuck, an Akita-Labrador cross, has been spending his first few weeks getting to grips with his new owner’s thatching business.

The pair are already inseparable, and Richard hopes this will be the start of a life-long working relationship.

He told the BBC: ‘He’s new to the family, new to the business.

‘I’ve only had him a few weeks be he’s already fitting in with us and you know he’s really enjoying the trade.

‘He’s our new generation of a dog on the roof with us, we used to have Axel, but he passed away last year.’

Axel, a Labrador, was a well-known figure on the roofs of Norfolk, and could often be seen perched on the highest point of the roof Richard and his colleagues were working on.

Although he can never be replaced, it is hoped Shuck will follow in his paw prints and be able to help out with the heavy workload in no time.

But don’t worry, the youngster takes regular breaks back on solid land with his Staffordshire Bull Terrier pal Bruno.
