Prep School Rules: Élite Has Already Been Renewed For a Fifth Season

While the majority of us are still recovering from the action-packed third season of Netflix’s breakout Spanish-language drama Élite, the streamer is already in production on a fifth outing for the addicting thriller about the haves and have-nots at an expensive, exclusive prep school in the fictional town of Las Encinas, Spain. The show announced its renewal earlier today with an Instagram post showing cast members Georgina Amorós and Carla Díaz opening a box that unleashed a gold number “5” balloon.

“Open for a surprise,” the accompanying caption read.

The renewal comes ahead of Élite’s fourth season premiere, which is slated to debut on the streamer later this year after wrapping filming in late December. It’s yet another sign of Netflix’s unflinching confidence in the enduring popularity of this surprise hit show. While beloved sitcoms like One Day at a Time, true-crime mockumentaries like American Vandal, and inventive animated series like Tuca & Bertie have all been given the axe after only a few seasons (just one in the case of Tuca), the platform’s willingness to throw money behind a series before it’s even premiered a new season is surprising.

Of course, we aren’t complaining, especially since Élite has consistently wowed viewers with its riveting combination of compelling mystery, emotional teen drama, and no-holds-barred steamy sex — much of which is queer. After its first season, Élite was endlessly praised for its refreshing depiction of a complex queer relationship between a drug-dealing Muslim outcast and a budding tennis champion. Later seasons have gone on to explore various forms of sexual fluidity; you’d be hard-pressed to find any show that’s more comfortable with casual threesomes.

How a Gay Couple On a Netflix Show Stole My Heart

Omar and Ander are more than just the best couple on Netflix’s Élite — they might be the best couple on TV this year, period.

The upcoming fourth season will be the series’ first without its original core cast. While characters like Omar (Omar Ayuso), Ander (Arón Piper), Samuel (Itzan Escamilla), and Guzmán (Miguel Bernardeau) are all set to return, fan favorites like Nadia (Mina El Hammani), Lu (Danna Paola), Valerio (Jorge Lopez), Polo (Alvaro Rico), and Carla (Ester Exposito) all wrapped their respective roles after season three. (The latter three characters were at the center of many of the aforementioned threesomes, so forgive us for mourning.)

That being said, Exposito’s post-Élite career has been more than fruitful, having starred in the incredible Veneno, one of our favorite shows of 2020, and Netflix’s wildly addicting Someone Has to Die in the last few months alone.

Thankfully, these beloved characters are being replaced by some equally exciting new faces, including previously announced additions like Manu Ríos, Pol Granch, Martina Cariddi, and the aforementioned Carla Díaz. Furthermore, alongside today’s season five renewal, Netflix also announced the new additions of Valentina Zenere, a 24-year-old Argentinian actress best known for playing Ámbar Smith in Disney Channel’s long-running Spanish-language series Soy Luna, and André Lamoglia, a 23-year-old Brazilian actor who is also a Disney Channel alum. Lamoglia hails from both the Portuguese-language Juacas and the Spanish-language BIA.
