Premier League income dropped by £600m amid COVID-19 impact — The Athletic study

What are the headline figures?

During the 2018-19 season, Premier League clubs posted overall income of around £5.1 billion. From the accounts that have been posted so far for the 2019-20 season, the total is just over £4.2 billion.

Newcastle and Watford are yet to file. The income from those two clubs should see the figure rise to £4.5 billion.

That leads to a decline of around £600 million.

Why did income fall so drastically?

There are two main components to the huge drop in income in the Premier League.

The first is the fact that clubs resumed the season behind closed doors last June.

That led to a significant loss of match-day income, as each team had at least four home games left.

The other issue was the £330 million rebate paid to broadcasters. Clubs have accounted for the majority of that in their 2019-20 figures.

Is there anything else I need to know?

Yes, plenty.

Matt Slater has pulled together a deep dive into the state of play for finances across the Premier League. It covers late filing times, how the Big Six are split financially and the overall state of play for clubs in the division.
