Portugal vs South Korea World Cup player ratings – Cristiano Ronaldo quiet

Both Portugal and South Korea progressed to the last-16 in a dramatic finale to World Cup Group H.

A stoppage time goal by Hwang Hee-chan secured a 2-1 win for South Korea which proved just about enough to progress on goals scored after Uruguay could only defeat Ghana 2-0.

Sportsmail rates each of the Portugal and South Korea players on their performances.

SOUTH KOREA

Kim Seung-gyu – The South Korean goalkeeper made a number of important saves to keep his team in contention, not least when he smothered an effort from Cristiano Ronaldo when clean through. Earlier denied Joao Cancelo at his near post when Portugal were well on top. 7.5

Kim Moon-hwan – Had the measure of Joao Cancelo for the most part, ensuring Portugal couldn’t build too often down their left-hand side. 7

Kwon Kyung-won – Came into the starting line-up in place of the injured Kim Min-Jae and looked composed and confident to keep Portugal at arm’s length during their periods on top. 7

Kim Young-gwon – In the right place to score the equalising goal, which inspired confidence that South Korea could get a positive result following Portugal’s bright start. Defended stoutly as well, ensuring the back line wasn’t breached on too many occasions. 7.5

Kim Jin-Su – Thought he’d scored with a close-range tap-in only to see the offside flag raised. Got forward to decent effect but was troubled by Diogo Dalot defensively. 6

Hwang In-beom – Enjoyed a cross-field pass looking for Son Heung-min, a tactic deployed to good effect several times to good effect. Forced a decent save from Diogo Costa in the second-half, though the effort was straight at Portugal’s keeper. 6.5

Jung Woo-young – Needed to be brimming with energy to stifle the talent in this Portugal side, even though it had been much rotated. Did exactly that to shield the defence during moments of alarm. 7

Lee Kang-in – Delivered some testing crosses for the Portuguese defence and it was his corner that led to the equalising goal. 7

Lee Jae-sung – Plenty of industry but not quite as effective as the attackers around him and was replaced by the eventual match winner with 25 minutes left. 6

Son Heung-min – The decibel levels from the many South Korean supporters in the stadium rose dramatically every time he touched the ball. For the most part, Son had too many touches on those marauding runs, however, failing to look up to spot team-mates in better positions. But you knew that direct running threat from deep could ultimately prove crucial and so it proved when he slipped the through pass to Hwang for the winner. We didn’t know if he would make this World Cup after fracturing his face but the adventure goes on. 7.5

Cho Gue-sung – The first line of defence with the pressing but didn’t see too many chances come his way. 6

Substitutes

Hwang Hee-chan (for Lee Jae-sung 65mins) – The hero of the nation having come off the bench to take the winner with clinical precision, following Son’s perfect through ball. Did well to time his run to stay onside to spark delirious celebrations. 7

PORTUGAL

Diogo Costa – Made a couple of saves to keep out long-range efforts from Son Heung-min and Hwang In-Beom but ultimately could do little to prevent the two goals. 6

Diogo Dalot – Portugal’s best player going forward, the Manchester United man was effective with passes and crosses, continuing his good form this season. The breakthrough goal for Ricardo Horta was the result of his footwork and cut-back. Will have a big role to play in the knockout rounds for as long as Portugal are in the competition. 7

Pepe – His accurate long passes from the back are an often-overlooked facet of the veteran’s game but one such sparked the move for the opening goal. Even his vast experience couldn’t avert defeat though. 6

Antonio Silva – The 20-year age gap between the two defenders was a source of amusement. Silva did well for the most part but Portugal switched off collectively for the two goals. 6

Joao Cancelo – Similarly to Kevin De Bruyne for Belgium on Thursday, here was another brilliant Manchester City player struggling to be an influence for their country. Though he grew into the contest, pushing forward at every opportunity, he was far from his best. Forced one save from the keeper after cutting inside early on. 6

Ruben Neves – Looked comfortable on the ball when Portugal were bossing possession and his passing was largely on point in midfield. Taken off on 65 minutes to preserve his legs for bigger tests to come. 6.5

Vitinha – Showed some nifty footwork on more than one occasion but not just for the sake of it as he created a couple of good openings for his team. Wasn’t afraid to take aim either and a couple of efforts needed saving. 7

Matheus Nunes – Showed some glimpses but lacked the incision with his passing and crossing to really open up South Korea. Will be battling for a starting spot in the next round. 6

Joao Mario – A similar story. Did the basic well enough but nothing to raise the pulse. Portugal have better options in his position. 6

Cristiano Ronaldo – A surprise starter given his apparent fitness concerns this week and his importance to the team during the knockout stages. But Fernando Santos had clearly acquiesced to an hour on the pitch so he could try and equal Eusebio’s record. Aside from one one-on-one opportunity which was well saved, he never looked likely to do so. Was starved of service and wasn’t able to make anything happen himself. 5

Ricardo Horta – A moment he will never forget when he netted in the opening few minutes but faded from the contest after that. 6.5

Substitutes

Andre Silva (for Ronaldo 65mins) – Not much of an upgrade on Ronaldo, which is saying something. 5

Rafael Leao (for Neves 65mins) – Struggled to make much impact even as spaces opened up late in the game. 6

Joao Palhinha (for Nunes 65mins) – Also struggled to make much impression as Portugal looked to make it three wins from three. 6

William Carvalho (for Joao Mario 81mins)

Bernardo Silva (for Vitinha 81mins)
