Players Championship: The best of round three at TPC Sawgrass

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Day three of the Players Championship is in the books. Here’s a closer look at some of the standouts from Saturday.

Hole of the day

The rules staff finally moved up the tee at the par-4 12th hole to enable players to drive the green should they be so inclined, and at 289 yards, many were able to reach it or come close with fairway woods.

No. 12 played the easiest on the course in the third round at 3.507 and yielded the most birdies (35) among the par-4 holes. There were three eagles (Cameron Smith, Matt Jones and Brendon Todd) and only four bogeys, the fewest among par-4 holes. There was only one double-bogey.

Shot of the day

It’s hard to imagine getting off to a better start than Brian Harman of St. Simons Island, Georgia, did. Harman holed his second shot at the par-4 first hole from 109 yards, with the ball landing on the green and trickling in.

It was the second eagle-two at the first hole this week and both have been by former University of Georgia golfers. Chris Kirk holed out in the second round. There have been 12 eagle-twos at No. 1 in Players history, and two in the same tournament for the first time since 1998 (Joey Sindelar and Omar Uresti).

Stat of the day

33. Consecutive holes without a bogey for Doug Ghim until he inexplicably bogeyed the easiest par-5 on the course, No. 16. There were only eight bogeys at the hole all day.
