Plane crashes down at Tennessee country club

Those sneaking in a round at the Humboldt Golf & Country Club in Humboldt, Tennessee — about halfway between Memphis and Nashville — got quite a surprise on Friday.

A four-seater plane crash-landed into the fence outside a swimming pool at the Humboldt Golf & Country Club Friday afternoon after swooping through the course.

The pilot and passenger were uninjured and no one at the country club was harmed.

Webb Webster is the golf pro at Humboldt, and he said the course is adjacent to a municipal airport. He said the plane lost power soon after takeoff and the pilot used the course as a soft spot to land.

“We had plenty of bystanders who saw the whole thing,” Webster said. “They tried to land in the fairway, but ended up crashing into the pool.”

The pool is centrally located in the middle of a number of holes at the club, and it’s directly next to the first tee of the 6,600-yard, 18-hole track. The plane did touch down on the driving range and skimmed through a pair of fairways, but Webster said there was little damage to the turf.

“It could have been a disaster,” Webster said.

Humboldt Fire Chief Chester Owens said he was waiting on the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration to determine the cause of the crash.

“Nobody was hurt, everybody walked away.” Owens said.
