Pistons extend coach Dwane Casey’s contract through 2024

Casey’s work this season

James L. Edwards III, Pistons beat writer: The Pistons are in the midst of putting together one of the better rebuilds in modern basketball, and Casey deserves a lot of the credit. The young players on the roster have improved steadily throughout the season, and despite Detroit’s record, the franchise has been fairly competitive night to night.

Players, clearly, are buying into what Casey is preaching and his methods. If the Pistons are on the cusp of turning a corner, Casey will get to see it through rather than just do the dirty work.

His relationship with general manager Troy Weaver

Edwards: A few weeks back, Weaver went out of his way to applaud the job Casey has done this season.

“I absolutely believe and trust that we have the best coach in the world for what we’re going through,” he said. “His steadiness, the way he sets the tone with these guys, they often say that the team takes on the personality of the coach and that’s happened.”

Weaver has taken notice of how the players have improved under Casey’s watch and the fight the youthful team shows regularly. As I said before, this shows a great trust that Casey not only can start the rebuild, but he can see it all the way through, too.
