The U.S. Open has returned to Torrey Pines in San Diego for a second time.

The South Course, which opened in 1957, is also the annual home of the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open, played in February.

The layout can be stretched to 7,802 yards off the back tees but this week, Torrey Pines will be set up at 7,652 yards and will play to a par of 71. The course has a course rating of 79 and a slope rating of 151.

In 2021, the U.S. Golf Association reports that it received 9,069 entries, the eighth-highest total in U.S. Open history. The field of 156 golfers will be cut to the top 60 and ties after 36 holes.

In 2008, Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate faced off in an 18-hole playoff on Monday that went extra holes. The USGA’s format now is a two-hole aggregate playoff will take place immediately after Sunday’s final round. If there is still a tie, then it goes to sudden death.

The purse will be $12.5 million, the highest among golf’s major championships. The winner gets $2.25 million this year.
