Petra Kvitova withdraws from French Open after hurting ankle at news conference

Petra Kvitova has withdrawn from the French Open after suffering a freak ankle injury during her media duties on Sunday, she announced in a statement.

“I fell and hurt my ankle. Unfortunately, after an MRI and much discussion with my team, I have made the tough decision that it would be unwise to play on it,” she said. “It’s incredibly bad luck, but I will stay strong and do my best to recover in time for the grass-court season.”

Kvitova, the No. 11 seed in the tournament, won her first-round match against Greet Minnen 6-7 (3), 7-6 (5), 6-1 on Sunday.

Her decision comes one day after Naomi Osaka withdrew from the French Open following the increased attention surrounding her media boycott in Paris.

Last year, Kvitova reached the French Open semifinal before losing to Sofia Kenin. The Czech tennis player won both of her Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014. This year’s competition of the grass-court major is set to start on June 28.
