‘People are hungry for the truth’: Why sports documentaries are in a golden era


It’s Sports TV and Week at The Athletic, and an easy argument can be made that best stuff we get to see on the small screen (aside from the sports themselves) is in the realm of documentaries. From features produced for HBO and Netflix to the highly influential output of ESPN Films and the “30 for 30“ series, we appear to be in a genuine golden age of docs.

The Athletic brought together a panel of accomplished sports documentary directors and producers for a lengthy discussion on everything from the mechanics of documentary making and the art of the interview to why the ground is so fertile for this genre of storytelling.
