‘It was the president of Juventus, who said “after the tournament we’d like you to sign”‘.

‘So you can imagine I’ve got that going through my mind, as well as trying to win the semi-final and play in a World Cup final. Then obviously there were the tears, and it was all one big bundle.’

But the infamous snapshots of his tears on the field came after a lunging tackle on Thomas Berthold resulted in a yellow card and subsequent suspension from the final.

The Three Lions crashed out on penalties, however, after the dramatic semi-final encounter – and Gascoigne would later return to England with the potential of a move to Italy now planted in the back of his mind.

The now 52-year-old signed for Serie A outfit Lazio two years later, making 43 appearances and scoring six goals during his turbulent three season spell at the Stadio Olimpico.
