Padres close to acquiring Nationals’ Max Scherzer: Sources

The Padres are close to acquiring Nationals pitcher and three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer, sources tell The Athletic on Thursday.

Scherzer, who turned 37 on Tuesday, is 7-4 this season with a 2.83 ERA and 142 strikeouts in 105 innings. He missed his last start with triceps discomfort.

As a player with 10 years of MLB service and five with the same team, Scherzer had 10-5 rights to veto any trade.

Scherzer, an eight-time All-Star who helped lead the Nationals to a 2019 World Series win against the Houston Astros, is in the final season of a seven-year, $210 million contract he signed in 2015 after five seasons with the Detroit Tigers. Among active pitchers, Scherzer is fourth in wins above replacement (62.3), seventh in ERA (3.19) and second in strikeouts (2,926).

The MLB trade deadline is Friday at 4 p.m. ET.
