Trainer Enebish Ganbat plans to run Pacific Classic third-place finisher Mongolian Groom in the Grade 1 Woodward this weekend at Saratoga, turning around on one week of rest, according to drf.com. The gelded 4-year-old son of Hightail was sent to post at 18-1 odds, the second-longest chance on the tote board, but was beaten just a neck by runner-up Draft Pick in the Del Mar contest.
“We ran in the Pacific Classic. I didn’t plan to come here, but the next day I saw a horse come back in really good condition like he could run the next day,” Ganbat said. “This is a very good race. If we could win this race, maybe we could be invited to Japan or some big race.”
An allowance winner at Santa Anita in February, Mongolian Groom also ran third in the G1 Santa Anita Handicap and second in the G2 San Diego Handicap this year. From 14 lifetime starts, the gelding has two wins, two seconds, and three thirds for career earnings of $369,141. Out of the Dynaformer mare Bourbonesque, Mongolian Groom was a $12,000 juvenile at the 2017 OBS April sale. His fourth dam is the four-time Grade 1-winning millionaire Versailles Treaty.
Others expected for the Grade 1 Woodward include Vino Rosso, Bal Harbour, Wooderson, Tom’s d’Etat, Yoshida, Mr. Buff, and Preservationist.
