Owner David Neilson and trainer Anthony Pecoraro are both appealing six-month suspensions and $1,000 fines issued by the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission because of an “unauthorized use of shockwave therapy,” reports the Thoroughbred Daily News.
The rulings stem from an investigation into the catastrophic breakdown of Glencairn at Delaware Park on Aug. 5. The heavy favorite in that $5,000 claiming race, the gelding had most recently started for a tag of $25,000 on Apr. 6 at Aqueduct.
“The mortality review has to do with interviewing the trainer, checking the vet records, checking the past performances, talking to the riders,” said DTRC executive director John Wayne. “During that investigation, it was discovered that the horse had received shock wave therapy, and that’s the part that is pending before the commission.”
Due to Neilson and Pecoraro’s appeals, the suspensions and fines have been stayed until the commission can host a hearing on Apr. 15, 2020.
