Owendale Pulls Clear Late In Oklahoma Derby

Rupp Racing’s Owendale had to go four wide all the way around the far turn, but still managed to pull away late under Florent Geroux to win Sunday night’s Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby by about two lengths. The 3-year-old son of Into Mischief ran nine furlongs over Remington Park’s fast main track in 1:49.29. Owendale was the 2-1 second choice at post time for trainer Brad Cox.

Sleepy Eyes Todd, a 40-1 longshot, was quick out of the gate to take the early lead by about two lengths over 4-5 favorite Mucho Gusto down the backstretch. Geroux and Owendale allowed the pacesetters to get away early, staying out in the clear.

After a first quarter in :23.95, Sleepy Eyes Todd eased back on the throttle a bit to mark the half in 48.03 seconds. Owendale inched closer to the lead, moving into fourth before the far turn about two lengths behind the leader.

Mucho Gusto was the first to draw even with Sleepy Eyes Todd, and the prominently-placed Chess Chief also mounted his challenge. Owendale made it four horses straight across the track turning for home, but he was able to kick away late to win by about two lengths.

Sleepy Eyes Todd came back along the rail to hold second over Chess Chief, while Mucho Gusto had to settle for fourth.

Bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, Owendale is out of the unraced Bernardini mare Aspen Light. A $200,000 yearling at the Keeneland September sale, the colt broke his maiden in his third career start. His graded stakes debut in the Risen Star didn’t work out as planned, but Owendale won the Lexington next out before finishing third in the G1 Preakness. He also won the Ohio Derby this year, and his overall record stands at five wins from 12 starts for earnings of over $950,000.
