Ornstein: Agent Rangnick, Pogba options open, £1k-a-week Carroll, Newcastle’s director of football search

Manchester United prepared for Ralf Rangnick’s arrival as interim manager with a creditable draw at Chelsea and the German should be boosted in the next month or so when Paul Pogba returns from injury.

Pogba was ruled out for six to eight weeks after suffering a thigh problem on November 8 on France duty and it is thought that timescale for his comeback remains realistic.

The midfielder continues to rehabilitate in Dubai but is said to be enthused by the idea of working under Rangnick, having received positive feedback about the 63-year-old from contacts in the game.

Rangnick watched United’s 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on television in Germany and had no contact with the players or coaching staff, or any input on team selection.

His appointment is expected to be confirmed in the next 24 hours but it is not yet clear whether his first game in charge will be Thursday’s visit of Arsenal or Crystal Palace’s trip to Old Trafford on December 5.

There is still some uncertainty over when Rangnick’s visa process will be completed following his face-to-face meetings in London’s Mayfair with the United hierarchy last week. Unusually for a world-class manager, Rangnick has not used an agent during his talks with United, opting to represent himself in negotiations.
