Manchester United’s Champions League match at home against Young Boys on December 8 is at risk of being moved to a neutral venue because of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
On Saturday, Switzerland imposed new rules on travellers from Britain and other countries that have detected cases of the new COVID-19 variant.
With no elite sports exemption listed within the new strict rules, this would mean Young Boys would have to isolate for 10 days upon returning from the UK.
It is understood that UEFA has been in talks with the Swiss government over the future of the fixture after the new travel rules were introduced.
A statement from UEFA on Monday afternoon read: “UEFA is in touch with the Football Association, the Swiss Football Association, as well as with the respective clubs in regards to this matter.
“We will publish any further information if and when it is confirmed by the relevant authorities.”
Any change of venue would naturally have large financial repercussions for United, who announced Ralf Rangnick as their interim manager on Monday.
When United travelled to Switzerland, Young Boys beat Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team 2-1.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka was shown a straight red card 10 minutes before half-time for a clumsy tackle on Christopher Martins. A 95th-minute winner from Theoson Siebatcheu won Young Boys all three points.
