Oklahoma first thoughts: ‘Electric’ Caleb Williams transforms Sooners offense. ‘He’s letting it fly’

NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma’s Caleb Williams era has officially begun.

And what an era it portends to be.

No. 4 Oklahoma beat TCU 52-31 Saturday night on Owen Field to remain undefeated, with Williams making his starting debut one week after coming off the bench to lead the Sooners to a come-from-behind victory against Texas in the Cotton Bowl.

Williams completed 18 of 23 pass attempts for 295 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 66 yards and a score. The home fans roared when he was announced as the starter over Spencer Rattler before the game and some wore T-shirts emblazoned with the Superman logo in honor of Williams’ nickname.

Here are some initial thoughts and observations from Williams becoming the first true freshman QB to start at Oklahoma since Cale Gundy in 1990.

• The Texas game clearly wasn’t a fluke. It wasn’t a one-off. This is just how the Oklahoma offense looks like when Williams in leading it.

On all but three series, the Sooners either scored or were in position to score (uber-reliable kicker Gabe Brkic missed a 46-yard field goal in the first quarter).

Williams completed his first 10 pass attempts. His first incompletion came on a dropped touchdown by H-back Austin Stogner.

The Sooners finished with 525 yards of total offense and averaged a season-high 9.1 yards per play.
