The Edmonton Oilers are off to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 2017 after beating the Los Angeles Kings 2-0 in Game 7.
The win marks just the second time in Connor McDavid’s career that the Oilers have advanced to the Western Conference semifinals. The Oilers were swept by Winnipeg in four games last year and lost 3-1 to Chicago in the qualifying round the year before that.
Despite the loss, Los Angeles goaltender Jonathan Quick was the story of the game. Quick channeled some old school energy with a 39-save performance, while Mike Smith had a huge outing himself with the shutout.
Cody Ceci scored the first goal of the game in the second period, with Connor McDavid adding another late in the third period to seal the deal.
The Oilers will play the winner of the Calgary vs. Dallas series, with Game 7 in that set for Sunday evening.
The game marked the end of the career for Dustin Brown, who announced he would retire after the conclusion of the playoffs. Brown, 37, played his entire career with the Kings since getting drafted 13th overall in 2003, recording 712 points in 1,296 career regular season games and 49 points in 81 playoff outings, winning two Stanley Cups.
