NYRA Changes Its Position, Will Not Allow Hollendorfer-Trained Horses To Run

When Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer was banned from racing and training at The Stronach Group-owned tracks last weekend, the New York Racing Association was one of several groups which stepped forward to allow the trainer the chance to stable and race at its tracks. A week later, reports the Daily Racing Form, NYRA has changed its position and will not allow Hollendorfer trainees to run.

Instead, several of the horses Hollendorfer has had stabled in New York will now be trained by his assistant, Don Chatlos, Jr., including the upcoming stakes probables Brill (G3 Victory Ride) and Rowayton (G3 Dwyer), both owned by Larry Best’s OXO Equine.

“They’ll be in Don’s name, he is now the trainer, he has his own insurance, everything,” Hollendorfer said. “I’m going to be forced to do that because my counsel told me that he understood if we entered horses that we could enter them but they would be scratched. How they would do that I don’t know. I didn’t want to take a chance on Larry’s horses getting to run.”
