Number Of People Betting On Sports Doubled In 2021, Poll Finds, As New York’s Reports An Explosive Debut

The number of American adults regularly gambling on sports rose from 5% to 12% between January and December 2021, according to a Morning Consult poll released Tuesday, the same day eye-popping data from the launch of online wagering in New York rolled out.

The Morning Consult survey conducted last month found that 12% of respondents placed at least one sports bet per week and 25% of people placed any sort of monetary wager on sports, up from 5% weekly bettors and 20% overall participation in January of last year.

The survey came a month before the January 8 debut of online betting in New York and data released by the New York state government Tuesday revealed explosive results for the launch: More than 650,000 unique accounts were created on betting apps and more than $150 million was wagered in the state’s first weekend of legal operations alone.

The Morning Consult survey was conducted among 2,096 Americans ages 21 and older January 25-26 and among 4,224 Americans ages 21 and older December 11-15.
