Novak Djokovic uncertain of fitness ahead Paris Masters clash with Kyle Edmund

Novak Djokovic expects to be playing with illness again when he takes on Kyle Edmund this afternoon.

The Serbian was under the weather during his straight-sets win over lucky loser Corentin Moutet yesterday.

And he is not confident the bug will have gone when he returns to action.

The world No 1 was asked if he expects to be fit in time for the clash with Edmund.

“Expect, no. Hope, yes,” Djokovic replied.

But if the Serbian has been feeling unwell for days then was he close to pulling out of the tournament?

“No not really. I actually when I came here, Friday, I felt ok the first couple of days,” he explained.

“Then the last few days something unfortunately caught up with my and health-wise I’m not feeling my best.

“I have had quite a few cases where I have already been in a tournament and getting better as days go by.

“Of course it affects your energy and vitality on the court, alertness, attention and all these different things.

“It’s not ideal but in these kind of circumstances you just have to accept it and do everything you can to recover.”

As Djokovic got his Paris Masters campaign underway on Wednesday it means he will not get a day off if he continues his winning run.

He added: “I don’t really have time because I will play every day if I’m winning.

“I have had cases before where I have not felt well and actually gone through the tournaments and won tournaments.

“I’m hoping and I’m believing I can feel better every day.”
