Novak Djokovic prevented Federer and Nadal 'explosion’ as political problem leaked

Sergiy Stakhovsky was one of a handful of tennis stars to resign from the player council this summer amid political chaos.

World No 1 and player council chairman Novak Djokovic is said to have been pushing for controversial changes.

The direction in which tennis was going became so concerning that Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal felt they had no choice but to rejoin the council.

But all the squabbling has remained behind closed doors – until Stakhovsky decided to spill all.

“They officially announced their desire to return to the council and no one could decline their proposals,” Stakhovsky told Ukrainian media.

“One thing is for someone to say: ‘Stakhovsky, no, because we all know more than you’, but, will Federer be told that?

“Of course, Federer is afraid and therefore, the two were chosen to return.

“If they had not accepted Roger and Rafa’s return, an explosion would have occurred.”

Djokovic came under huge fire for backing his friend Justin Gimelstob to remain on the council despite being charged with assault.

“Some of the participants began to make agreed decisions among themselves and all this was orchestrated by a person who was no longer within the council (refers to Gimelstob),” Stakhovsky continued.

“He was forced to leave his position, but left everything ready for his chosen one could enter and that he could continue influencing the board in order to return in the future.”

However, Stakhovsky is confidence a balance has been restored through Federer and Nadal.

“I am sure that this will create a counterweight and the situation will be normalised,” he said.

“I have been in the council for more than six years and we never had personal goals, we did everything because we thought that was good for the next generations of players, but the last I think the composition of the council was created exclusively to pursue some personal interests and in the last seven months we did nothing at all.

“The prize money will not grow next year because no plan has been made to change the ATP 500 tournaments and 250 because the contract ended.

“With our march, everything was uneven since the other side was a majority but with Federer and Nadal, not only has it matched but I would say that everything has tilted to the side of Roger and Rafa.

“Those who told me they were smarter that me and that they could do better than me, now they cannot say the same to Federer. In the council it was said that Roger supported something, but since he was not there, others made the decision. If Federer now says something, I doubt someone contradict him.”
