Now, Medvedev has hinted that his friend and rival has been sending him text messages during the Davis Cup Finals, as the Russian Tennis Federation defeated defending champions Spain in a decisive rubber in the group stages to keep Djokovic’s Team Serbia alive and allow them to advance to the quarter-finals.
“It’s funny, because during the match, we were getting messages from some people in Serbia, let’s call it that, because I won’t say who, and not just me, but a lot of us saying, go ahead, guys, we believe in you,” the 25-year-old said, after Andrey Rublev and Aslan Karatsev clinched a victory over Spain in the decisive doubles rubber to help the RTF go top of their Davis Cup group, and help Serbia get a place in the quarter-finals as one of the two best runner-ups, alongside Sweden.
“We just wanted to win the game, and we are really happy that we did.”
The world No 2 was asked whether Djokovic owed him a dinner at a restaurant, and he joked: “I think we’re not going to do it during the tournament. But maybe one day we’ll see.”
