Novak Djokovic fights past spirited Kyle Edmund to stay on course for Rafael Nadal final

Djokovic hasn’t been feeling his best at the Paris Masters this week and was facing an inspired Edmund for a place in the quarter-finals.

The Briton ended a eight-match losing run when he won his opening round match against Ricardas Berankis before defeating 14th seed Diego Schwartzman.

And he had Djokovic sweating in the first set as the 24-year-old continued to press forward, eventually forcing a tiebreak.

But the world No 1 stepped it up a gear to take the opening set.

That clearly set Edmund’s confidence back as his level soon dropped in the second.

Unforced errors were beginning to creep into his game as Djokovic took advantage, eventually getting his first break of the match at 1-1.

And the Serbian’s class shone through for the remainder of the match as he won the remaining games to stroll through to the quarter-finals.

Djokovic will now face Stefanos Tsitsipas in the next round after the Greek tennis star defeated Alex de Minaur.

The 16-time Grand Slam champion suffered defeat to Tsitsipas in the last meeting at the Shanghai Masters earlier this month.

Rafael Nadal meanwhile will look to follow in the footsteps of Djokovic when he takes on Stan Wawrinka later today.

The Spaniard breezed past Adrian Mannarino in his opening match of the week yesterday.

Djokovic and Nadal are aiming to end the year as world No 1, and the latter can secure that title if he wins the Paris Masters.
