Novak Djokovic father makes stunning Roger Federer claim after Wimbledon final

Federer came agonisingly close to winning Grand Slam No 21 at Wimbledon after beating Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals.

He had two match points after a mentally exhausting final against Djokovic, but the Serbian saved both before going on to win the longest Wimbledon men’s final in history.

It now means Djokovic sits just four Grand Slam titles behind Federer’s record haul.

With Federer approaching 38 years old Djokovic holds the advantage with time on his side to catch the Swiss tennis star.

Djokovic has dominated the world No 1 spot over the past decade, spending and impressive 261 days on top of the rankings.

Rafael Nadal is second, having spend 150 days on top with Federer just ahead of Andy Murray on 48 and 41 respectively.

Still, Federer only last year became the oldest world No 1 in history at 36 years old with his win at the Rotterdam Open.

He proved at Wimbledon that he can still compete with the best of them on the world stage in the near-five hour final against Djokovic.

But the 32-year-old’s dad, Srdjan Djokovic, believes his son is going to continue to dominate the sport and eventually become the record Grand Slam holder by next year.

“In the last ten years, Novak is the world’s best tennis player,” he told Sport Blic.

“Before the start of this season, he had 22: 9 against Federer, and 20: 9 against Rafa when he was watching for the last 6-7 years.

“To remain to play for another year, all the recordings that he has not yet, he will be down.

“One year ago there was 20:12 in the Grand Slam titles for Federer, now he is 20:16.

“We will talk again in a year.”

Djokovic has taken some time off on the schedule, opting against playing in the Citi Open in Washington next week.

Instead, the 16-time Grand Slam champion will make his return to action at the Rogers Cup, beginning on August 5.
