Novak Djokovic and wife Jelena have announced they will be donating €1million (£887,000) through the Novak Djokovic Foundation to help people in Serbia with the battle against coronavirus.
Over 24,000 people have died from the disease which has changed the lives of millions around the world.
On Thursday, the number of cases globally surpassed the 500,000 mark and it continues to rise.
Like many other countries, Serbia is in need of ventilators and medical equipment to help patients in hospitals.
Djokovic is a beloved figure in Serbia due to his achievement on the tennis court and his philanthropic work.
And the world No 1 and his wife Jelena have stepped up in a significant way to help vulnerable people.
“The fight is not easy, numbers are not pleasant, but I am convinced that we will manage to make it out of this stronger than before,” Djokovic told Serbian media in a video conference.
“It is important to remain united in this fight, to help each other, so we can defeat this virus faster and easier.
“We would like to use this opportunity to invite everyone else to join us and help numerous families and people who need help to survive and get healthy again.
“We will keep bringing people together, who are calling me every day, and who want to join in.
“Not everyone can help, many are hit hard by this situation, but fortunately, there are many people and companies who can help.
“We will open a special account for this emergency situation, like we did the last time when we were hit by the floods.
“[The] Novak Djokovic Foundation team is working like a well-oiled machine and we are ready to help.”
Djokovic’s efforts follow those made by his fellow rivals Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
On Thursday, Nadal launched a campaign to help raise €11million to support the Red Cross in badly hit Spain.
Earlier this week, Federer pledged 1m Swiss francs (£860,000) to help vulnerable families in Switzerland.
