Novak Djokovic adds former Wimbledon champion to coaching staff ahead of SW19 campaign

The world No.1 worked with three-time winner Boris Becker for three years until December 2016.

Now the 1992 champion Ivanisevic has joined the Serb’s team – which still includes main coach Marian Vajda – for his opening match on Centre Court on Monday against Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Ivanisevic told Sport Klub: “This is a huge recognition for me as a coach because Novak doesn’t choose coaches just like that, he needs to see that someone can help him.

“I am delighted that they’ve chosen me and I am happy that Marian is on board with it.

“First practice went really well and I hope that our collaboration will last.

“I am trying to move some of my previous obligations, but I’ll probably be able to stay at Wimbledon just for the first week.

“Novak looks ready, his mind is clear – if everything is OK, I think he has a big chance to defend his title here.”

The Serbian is keen to make a mark on the tournament over the next two weeks, and recently revealed why his 2019 preparations have differed from last year.

Djokovic decided not to take part in the traditional warm-up tournament at Queens, but insists that it won’t effect his performance.

“The situation is a bit different this time because I played very few matches prior to last year’s Wimbledon due to my injury and the elbow surgery,” he said.

“I plummeted down to 22nd on the ATP Tour but the extensive layoff gave me enough time to prepare for Wimbledon by entering the Queen’s tournament as a warm-up.

“This year, the exertions of a lengthy clay-court season prompted me to skip Queen’s and go straight to Wimbledon.”
