Nick Kyrgios injury update after controversial Laver Cup withdrawal – EXCLUSIVE

Nick Kyrgios will set off for China as scheduled later today despite the contentious shoulder injury which ruled him out of the finale of the Laver Cup.

The Australian is one of the star names at the inaugural Zhuhai Championships, an ATP 250 event, and has confirmed with organisers he still intends to arrive as planned tomorrow having been given a bye through to the second round.

The controversial 24-year-old had upset Team World captain John McEnroe by announcing he was not fit to play his final singles rubber in Geneva.

Now his swift recovery is likely to do little to ease the mood of the fiercely competitive seven-time grand slam winner in the aftermath of Team Europe’s success.

Kyrgios’s withdrawal meant Taylor Fritz had to step in to face Europe’s Dominic Thiem, himself a replacement for Rafa Nadal.

The alterations were reported to have caused tension backstage at the event, with Team World members already bemused by Kyrgios’s behaviour.

Following defeat against Roger Federer from a strong position, Kyrgios reportedly explained to team-mates that he had been distracted by a “hot chick” in the stand who he “wanted to marry”.

Earlier this year, Kyrgios withdrew from the French Open just days before his potential first-round match with Britain’s Cameron Norrie.

Consequently, the organisers were relieved to hear positive news as they seek to establish tour-level tennis in this region of China.

Bjorn Borg had no sympathy for Team World at the Laver Cup and their protestations at the rules.

“I will say it like this. First of all this is the best thing that has happened to tennis in my opinion, the Laver Cup,” Borg said.

“Regarding the rules, unfortunately one of our players got injured and you can always complain but it’s the rules.

“We are sitting here today and we won. Simple as that.”
