Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas beef takes interesting twist for Citi Open

The NextGen duo were involved in a heated exchange last year ahead of the 2018 US Open.

Tsitsipas took to Twitter while walking around New York and enjoying the views, and Kyrgios popped up in the responses with “Da fuq.”

The Australian quickly deleted his reply but took another shot at his rival later that month by saying: “He’s going to be very good. He isn’t very good now, but he’s going to be very good.”

The Greek tennis star wasn’t going to take that sitting down, going on to take a thinly veiled dig at Kyrgios for his personal habits.

“Everybody knows who Kyrgios is, let’s be honest,” Tsitsipas said when asked about his relationship with Kyrgios earlier this year.

“I know some people see these things I do as something weird, writing all these tweets that make no sense.

“It’s not sitting in my room playing video games, Fortnite like someone does. It’s better going outside and creating something rather than just sitting inside playing video games for the whole day, which I did before and now see no point in doing.”

However, it appears the two are ready to put that behind them at the Citi Open next week.

The duo will partner up in the men’s doubles as well as competing in the singles.

The interesting partnership was the idea of Mark Ein, the Citi Open tournament director.

“Since we took over,” Ein said, “thinking about highlighting doubles and creating compelling teams to come together has been a focus of ours.”

Tsitsipas will enter the Citi Open as the top seed in the singles draw with neither Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer set to feature.

They will be joined by other exciting young talents such as Felix Auger-Aliassime, Frances Tiafoe and Alex de Minaur to name but a few.

Andy Murray will also return to action in the men’s doubles with Ein confirming the Brit will partner his brother Jamie.

“They called us and said Andy really wanted to come back to DC and wanted to play doubles with his brother,” he told BBC Sport.

“We’re putting a real focus on doubles at the event – it’s a terrific piece of the competition and entertainment value for fans so we were thrilled he wanted to return.”
