The NHLPA has announced that they have voted in favor of building a search committee to find a future replacement for executive director Don Fehr.
The board is made up of NHL players Ian Cole, Justin Faulk, Sam Gagner, Zach Hyman, Kyle Okposo, Nate Schmidt and Kevin Shattenkirk.
Fehr has held his position since 2010. In 2012, he became the first director to be involved in a work stoppage in two sports after doing so with the MLB during the 1994-95 strike. Fehr started his career with the MLBPA in 1985 and stepped down in 2009.
The NHLPA’s news comes months after a report about the sexual assault of Kyle Beach indicated that Fehr did nothing about the incidents detailed.
“The many players who have played in the NHL over the last eleven years greatly appreciate the significant accomplishments under the leadership of Don Fehr. Don joined the NHLPA after a long and successful career as Executive Director of the MLBPA and quickly stabilized the union following a very difficult period,” a statement from the PA said.
Fehr will continue in his role throughout the search, The committee will provide an update in late July.
