NHL trade grades: Breaking down the 3-team deal that sends Nick Foligno to the Maple Leafs


The trade

The Maple Leafs acquire forwards Nick Foligno and Stefan Noesen.

The Blue Jackets acquire the Maple Leafs’ first-round pick in 2021 and fourth-round pick in 2022 and retain 50 percent of Foligno’s cap hit.

The Sharks acquire the Maple Leafs’ fourth-round pick in 2021 and retain 25 percent of Folgino’s cap hit.

Scott Burnside: So, Toronto GM Kyle Dubas gets his top-nine forward with oodles of grit and experience in Nick Foligno who joins grizzled vets Joe Thornton, Jason Spezza and Wayne Simmonds in the Maple Leafs’ lineup. The Leafs paid a hefty price for a guy who has seven goals and hasn’t had a 20-goal season since 2016-17. But Foligno, 33, will up the ante when the going gets tough come playoff time and the Leafs’ talented youngsters will follow.
