NFL secondary ticket market ‘is effectively shut down’ as demand craters


As The Washington Football Team today joined the three other NFL clubs (the New York Jets, Giants and Las Vegas Raiders) to thus far announce they won’t be hosting fans this season, the secondary ticketing market is sending the signal that it expects most teams to go fanless this season as the coronavirus appears unlikely to recede.

When tickets first went on sale in early May, demand for NFL ducats was surprisingly strong, with prices driven up sky-high in a number of markets. But the market has all but collapsed, with the volume of transactions negligible.

“Tickets available in early May … quantity was down about 45 percent” from the same point in May 2019, said Jesse Lawrence, founder of ticket marketplace TicketIQ. “And quantity is now down, and this is compared to last year, quantity’s now down 90 percent.”
