News24.com | Brooks Koepka peaking at right time for another major tilt?

After struggling for form in recent months, Brooks Koepka feels he may be peaking just in time for the first major of the year.

While the former World No 1 ultimately came off second best to Justin Thomas at the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational on Sunday, Koepka still feels there were plenty of positives to take from the week.

“This is where we wanted to be, peaking for the PGA [Championship],” he said. “I feel like my game’s right there, everything’s solid. I hit a lot of good putts today, just didn’t go in.”

Koepka’s game may have ultimately let him down over the closing holes in Memphis, particularly the bogey at 16 and his closing double-bogey at the 18th after finding the water while going in search of a birdie to tie Thomas for the lead, but it’s the kind of loss that still leaves him feeling a lot more confident about the state of his game than he was before.

“I knew what was going on the whole time. I thought I hit a good chip on 16, I don’t know what it did, then another minute I thought it was in for another second. To make bogey there was disappointing,” he said.

“You’ve got to take an aggressive line on 18, so it is what it is. I feel like I’m playing good, so I’m excited to tee it up. Everything’s moving in the right direction.

“Once you lose, doesn’t matter if it was by one or 10, it doesn’t matter. So pleased with it, moving in the right direction and looking forward to next week.”
