Are contract extensions a reward for work already completed? Or an endorsement of work to come?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men put in a controlled, if not convincing performance in their 1-0 victory over West Ham on Sunday. Manchester United dominated possession (63 per cent to 37), chances (15 shots to seven) and denied West Ham from having a shot on target. The victory takes them back into second place in the league and they look a near certainty to qualify for the Champions League next season (analytics website FiveThirtyEight gives them a 95 per cent chance of finishing the season in the top four)

United are in a good position, both in regards to the league table as well as their forward momentum, so it is little surprise recent reports have Solskjaer on the verge of a contract extension.
